Making Theatre Sustainable

At Vamos Theatre, we believe we must all step up and make changes, however challenging they may be, so that we can live happy, healthy lives within the limits of the planet, leaving space for the natural world.

Our Environmental Action Plan

In response to the climate emergency, and with the support of Julia’s Bicycle, the Theatre Green Book, Arts Council England and One Planet Living®, we have launched a three-stage Environmental Action Plan to reduce the environmental impact of our theatre making and touring.

Our Action Plan is based on the One Planet Living framework, designed to create a route map towards a more sustainable future. One Planet Living, created by Bioregional and developed together with WWF, comprises ten intuitive principles that can be used by anyone – personally and professionally – to imagine, plan, do, and communicate about sustainability.

For Vamos Theatre, this means identifying the many ways our actions affect the environment, instigating practical ways to reduce our impact whilst retaining the cultural and social value of what we do, and expanding our sustainability ambitions over the coming years.

2023-24 at a glance

Throughout the life of the Action Plan, we will be sharing our actions with our supporters. Please let us know your thoughts and help us make the best difference we can. For more on One Planet Living visit

BSL transcript
At Vamos Theatre, we’ve completed Year Two of our Environmental Action Plan, created to reduce the environmental impact of our theatre making and touring. We’d love to share with you how the year has gone. We’ve had 7 aims – covering a wide range of our activities - from reducing consumption to growing a culture of sustainability, from travelling with less impact to reducing toxins in our construction. Here are some achievements we’ve been proud of: 75% of our costume and props were pre-existing or bought second-hand and we achieved a 68% reduction in our printed materials We did no travel by air, instead using train, ferry and online delivery. Next year, we hope to start implementing new touring models to limit carbon more effectively We reduced the use of spray paints, glues and other potential toxins in our construction, we extended our recycling facilities, used local suppliers, scored 8/10 in a staff happiness survey and added to our plastic-free office supplies. These are just a few of the changes we’ve been making. To find out more, visit
