We are delighted to launch the Vamos Emerging Artists programme, designed to introduce young performers to the skills of performing in mask, and to discover the next generation of 18-24-year-old performers from diverse communities across the UK.

The Vamos Emerging Artists programme is being run in partnership with seven venues, who will host Vamos Theatre’s free or subsidised mask taster workshops. The venues - The Swan Theatre, Worcester; Mercury Theatre, Colchester; Arena Theatre, Wolverhampton; Exeter Northcott Theatre and Jacksons Lane, London – will also help to get news of the workshops out to young performers as widely as possible. We can also offer BSL interpretation for the workshop at two venues.

In the sessions, we'll be introducing young performers to our mask theatre style, creating physical character and devising non-verbal theatre, as well as providing the chance to meet with like-minded performers and professionals. All young performers aged between 18 and 24 who are interested in physical theatre are welcome to apply, in particular artists from diverse ethnic backgrounds.

From the taster workshops, we are planning to bring together a group of emerging artists for a residency in summer 2022 to create and perform mask theatre from shared stories and backgrounds.

Honor Hoskins, Vamos Theatre’s Creative Producer, commented, “I am so excited about this project. It is brilliant to be working with young artists nationally, to hear their stories and share our mask skills and provide training, so they can confidently reinvent and reimagine non-verbal theatre skills in their own work. The strength of working with our fantastic partner venues means we are positive we will connect with diverse groups of artists that may never have heard of Vamos Theatre before, and we would not have had the gift of meeting before this project.”
