Fun was had by all last week as Carl Davies’ set for Nursing Lives arrived from the welders. Unlike our previous touring sets, this one has been made entirely in metal, which helps both with ease of carrying and van space during the tour. The set was welded by wonderful set builder Gavin Lewery from a model by Carl, who was inspired by how hospitals of the period were not only hard-working and practical, but also places of great caring and tenderness. Carl used the shape of hospital bed-frames of the period to guide the shapes in the set, as well as contrasting this practical metal with rounded curves and the soft fabrics with which he'll dress the set.

Having the set made before rehearsals begin means the company can really get to know it and use it to maximum effect. Over the next few weeks, Carl will cover the metal with fabrics and textures, which can be lit front and back, as well as creating the colour scheme for the production.

We’ll be showing the development of the set, as well as a sneaky preview of costumes, on our Facebook page, so don’t forget to follow us.
