We want our shows to be as inclusive as possible, so our Autumn tour of Finding Joy includes several Relaxed and Dementia Friendly Performances. Relaxed Performances are open to all, but specifically designed to welcome those who benefit, for whatever reason, from a more relaxed environment, such as people with sensory and communication disorders, a learning disability or autism spectrum condition.  Dementia Friendly Performances aim to welcome anyone living with dementia, and create an environment in which they feel comfortable and supported.

Relaxed Performances are a great way for family and friends to experience live performances together in an adapted environment. The show begins with a welcome from the cast and an example of what the masks look like and how they are worn. Auditorium lighting remains partly lit, so people can come and go as they like, and show content (such as loud sound or bright light) is adapted to minimise any adverse reaction. Audience members can make as much noise as they like, and the atmosphere aims to be, as you'd expect, relaxed!

If you're coming to a Relaxed Performance, you can download our Visual Story in advance, which explains the story of Finding Joy using pictures and accessible text. Click or tap here to access the Visual Story.

People living with dementia can often feel isolated and lose their confidence in things they previously enjoyed doing. A Dementia Friendly Performance is similar to a Relaxed Performance, but is designed to be adaptable to the needs of people living with dementia. Venue staff will have had specific training, seating will be more flexible, and there will be support from the venue for carers with the logistics of attending a show.
