In response to the climate emergency, and with the support of Julia’s Bicycle, the Theatre Green Book, Arts Council England and One Planet Living, we are proud to announce our three-stage Environmental Action Plan to reduce the environmental impact of our theatre making and touring.
One Planet Living is a sustainability framework designed to support organisations and individuals in creating a route map towards a more sustainable future, comprising ten simple principles that cover all aspects of social, environmental and economic sustainability. For us, this means taking a detailed look at the many ways our actions affect the environment, instigating practical ways to reduce our impact whilst retaining the cultural and social value of what we do, and expanding our sustainability ambitions over the coming years.
The plan will take in all the main goals of One Planet Living, which not only focuses on directly environmental areas, such as transport, materials, reducing waste and limiting carbon emissions, but also elements intrinsic to well-being, such as health, happiness, local community and equity.
We have already begun to implement our aims, focussing in the first stage on reducing waste, reducing plastic, looking at the materials we use, supporting and connecting with the local community and nurturing a new culture of sustainability across the company.
Artistic Director, Rachael Savage, comments, «Creating and implementing a practical, realistic and well-organised Environmental Action Plan is absolutely crucial for the planet, the future of theatre and our future alongside it. We believe it is the responsibility of all of us to step up and make changes, however challenging they may be, so that we can live happy, healthy lives within the limits of the planet, leaving space for the natural world. We’d like to thank One Planet Living for designing such a useful framework for us to use, and we are excited that we’ve started on this critical journey.”
We hope you will support us on our journey. We’ll be sharing our aims and actions as we go and we’d love your thoughts and feedback.
