Mask and Sensory Play for SEND Settings
This engaging workshop introduces SEND (special educational needs and disabilities) participants to full mask theatre and sensory-based play, based on Vamos Theatre’s accessible and impactful style of theatre making. The session uses clowning and improvisational play to empower participants, building confidence and communication, whether whilst devising theatre or in everyday life, and celebrates alternative, nonverbal methods of communication. The workshop is suitable for all ages and needs and can be led with more emphasis on mask work or sensory exploration as needed. We recommend mask work for KS3 upwards only.
The workshop will:
• gently and non-verbally introduce the basic skills of mask theatre, both in and out of mask, focusing on play and improvisation
• develop participants' understanding of their environment and social skills
• build participants’ confidence and communication through sensory play, and encourage clear and creative thinking
• subvert traditional performer/audience relationships through play
• develop teamwork and group trust
• allow shy or under-confident students to shine with 1-to-1 interactions and the protection of a mask
