In our final Meet the Cast and Crew series meet Richard J, Fletcher, Vamos Associate Artist, actor, and tour manager.

How did you get started as an actor, and who were your main influences?
As a child I trod the local amateur boards and developed a passion for dressing up and being daft, influenced mainly by my father; whose panto dame is still talked about in certain circles..

What is your most exciting performance experience to date?
Performing my "Slap Stick" in Noel Edmund's Crinkly Bottom at the BBC. I ended up in hospital.

In your opinion, what does mask theatre offer audiences that they cannot get from other forms of theatre?
Theatre without the spoken word is very special. It is primeval and relies on the universal language we all use each day.

What tips would you give an actor who is just starting to explore mask/visual theatre?
This may sound simple but it isn't. Everything must come from a place of "truth", you cannot hide behind a mask.

What do you enjoy most about the rehearsal process?
Lunch.

What is the most useful piece of advice you have been given in your own career and by whom?
A long time ago someone said at some point "You're not bad at this, give it a go!" .....But I can't remember who.

Richard J Fletcher
